The opening ceremony at Espergærde Gymnasium and HF this morning elapsed without any notable happenings. Then the United States was to make their opening speech. It’s a known fact that the United States and Greenpeace rarely share political opinions which often results in skirmishes between the two. This is exactly what happened at the opening ceremony this morning. As the ambassador of the United States began his speech, the two delegates of Greenpeace, placed on the balcony above the General Assembly, took a flag with the words “earth deserves a voice” written on it and with this flag they covered the flag of the United States.
This act what greeted by applause or yelling from the delegates of the GA.
What was the purpose of this act? How does the United States respond to a provocative act such as this?
In an interview Greenpeace and a delegate of the United States answered these questions.
The two delegates of Greenpeace state that the main reason for the act was to emphasize their presence and to draw attention to the fact that the United States of America hasn’t signed the Kyoto protocol and doesn’t meet the expectations of having a role of such big importance in the international society by not signing the protocol. The act was mainly an attack against the United States but they also wanted to emphasize to the entire General Assembly that we have to protect the environment because the earth is our future. They said: “The earth deserved a voice and that voice is us.”
We then asked a delegate of the United States, Alexander Lausen, to make sure that they as well would get the opportunity to comment on the provocative act. The delegate was very upset about the act and stated: “This was a complete and utter act of disrespect and it was an abomination to the respectful quality of the conference.” According to the delegate instead of responding in an act of the same manner the Greenpeace should be punished severely either by restrictions or fine.
Greenpeace wasn’t allowed to make an opening speech at the ceremony and this might have been the reason for them interrupting another ambassador’s speech.
If this will result in further friction between Greenpeace and the United States is unknown but if this won’t another topic most possibly will.
